Game 2: vova5405 vs matt-cornelisen; 08-29-2019
Analysis of yesterday's game as Black. I used Stockfish and Chess.com. (Alternate lines are from Stockfish.) The game was 10 minutes per side. I need to play slightly longer games in order to take my time as I work to improve. Blasting through a bunch of short games hasn't helped me much to date, so I need to focus.
1. e4 e6
The French defense. Generally, as Black, I play 1...e6 and see what happens. I tried for a period of time trying to play 1...g6, but never had much success.
2. Nf3 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. c4?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was d4.
(4. d4 Nf6 5. Bd3 Bd6 6. O-O O-O 7. Re1 Bg4 8. c3 Nbd7)
4... dxc4?
Mistake. Best move was d4. My opening knowledge of the French defense (or any other) is minimal and so I'm lacking any book knowledge already. I liked the look of giving my opponent the isolated d pawn and thought I could try to play against it.
(4... d4 5. Bd3 Nf6 6. O-O Be7 7. Re1 O-O 8. Bc2 d3 9. Bxd3)
5. Bxc4 Qe7+
With zero development, I go for the check and hopefully the Queen exchange.
6. Qe2?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was Be2.
(6. Be2 Nc6 7. O-O Be6 8. d4 O-O-O 9. Bf4 Qb4 10. Qc2 Nf6)
6... Qxe2+ 7. Bxe2 Nf6 8. O-O Bd6 9. d3 O-O 10. h3 Be6 11. Be3 Nbd7 12. Nc3 c6 13. b3?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was Nd4. Up to this point, I had focused on putting my pieces on safe, protected squares. I have my light-squared Bishop stuck and don't want to risk a trade just yet if my opponent were to play Ng6. So I chose to play h6, to prevent that. Not sure if my thinking was sound, but that is what I was focused on at the time.
(13. Nd4 Rfe8 14. Nxe6 Rxe6 15. Rae1 Nb6 16. Bf3 Nfd5 17. Bd4 Nf4 18. Rd1 Rd8 19. Be3 Nfd5)
13... h6 14. Rad1?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was Nd4.
(14. Nd4 Rfe8)
14... Bc7?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was Bf5. I wanted to relocate my Bishop to b3. It felt poorly positioned to me d3. Stockfish doesn't think much of my idea.
(14... Bf5)
15. Rd2 Bb6 16. Bxb6 Nxb6 17. Ne4 Nfd5 18. Rc1 Rad8
Trying to reposition my pieces to attack the pawn on d3.
19. Nc5 Bc8 20. d4 Nd7 21. Ne5?!
Inaccuracy. Best move was Bc4. I was happy seeing this move. I felt it could open things up a bit. Furthermore, as I mentioned in my comments on game 1, my opponents Knights often mess me up, so I was happy to trade one off.
(21. Bc4 Nf4)
21... Nxe5 22. dxe5 Nf4 23. Bg4??
Blunder. Best move was Rcc2. Leaves the Rook hanging. I was trying very hard to see the board and was glad I didn't miss this obvious chance like I did the fork in my first game.
(23. Rcc2 b6)
23... Rxd2 24. Bxc8 Ne2+ 25. Kh2 Nxc1 26. Bxb7
From here on, I'm just trying to clear his last pieces off the board, carefully.
26... Nd3 27. Nd7 Rd8 28. Bxc6 Re2 29. Bb5 Rd2
Looking toward Nxf2.
30. e6 fxe6 31. Bxd3 Rxd3 32. Ne5
For a moment I thought about a5 or something - let him have a Rook for his Knight. But I decided that was a poor idea and that I needed to stop worrying about the Knights so much.
32... Rd2 33. f3 Rxa2 34. Nc6 Rd6 35. Ne7+?!
Best move was Ne5.
(35. Ne5 Rdd2)
35... Kf7 36. Nc8 Rdd2 37. Kh1?!
Checkmate is now unavoidable. Best move was Kg3. I saw the checkmate after this move.
(37. Kg3 Rd8)
37... Rxg2 38. Nd6+ Kg8 39. Ne4 Rgc2 40. Nf2 Rxf2 41. Kg1 Rfb2
White resigned. Next move is mate. For example, Ra1#.
In all, I was pleased with how I played in this game. Even though I didn't have good (much of any) opening knowledge, I thought that I held my own in the opening. I was able to develop without any major errors. When my opponent made a blunder (23. Bg4), I saw it immediately and capitalized. From there on out, I played deliberately and closed things out.
Today I am pretty busy, but I will hopefully have a chance to watch some videos and work through some lessons later on.
